Proud owners of Cottondale Game Ranch, Frans Schutte and his son, Frans Junior, recently announced a joint venture with Dr Mathews Phosa, former Mpumalanga Premier, well-known attorney and respected businessman. The partnership is aimed at playing an active role in the resettlement and sustainable conservation of superior African fauna throughout southern Africa to guarantee its prosperity for future generations; thus realising their mission of breeding indigenous, superior game to successfully roam the African continent.
This encompasses sable antelope, golden wildebeest and colour variant impala and will be expanded to eventually include buffalo, roan antelope and other species.
Cottondale Game Ranch is blessed with a proud record of disease-free buffalo meticulously selected from Northern Kruger, Madikwe, Buffalo Land and Barry Streicher. Selected Mopani heifers and 34”- plus cows walk with the bull Klein Rooi (48 1/8”, 136 ¼” SCI at 8 years) son of the bull Rooi (48”), descendant from the same famous Madikwe herd as the bull Tyson Norman Adami (53”).
Duke (48 ½” at 4 years 4 months) is the current celebrity as the son of Western Zambian sable bull Piet (53 5/8”), but he is still overshadowed by the stalwart bull Sam, “The Legend”, who singlehandedly produced nine of the mothers and four of the grandmothers of the 43 outstanding bulls on offer at Mr Warren’s recent record breaking auction, including Thometelo (51 ½”), one of the most sought after bulls in South Africa. Sam’s supreme genetic composition with added value from Assegai and then matched with Duke, is expected to produce one of the most diverse and sought after combinations yet.
The roans in the Cottondale antelope breeding project were carefully and scientifically selected from prime Tswalo and Glen Lyon reserves as well as the Northern Cape and Namibia, amongst others.
The resident breeding bulls are Yster (31” at nine years) and Gariep (31 ½” at six years, son of Majestic 34” from Ellalien Davey Romaco Ranch). Heifers purchased from Glen Lion were sired by 31” bulls and all other female breeding stock at Cottondale were sired by sought-after 31”-plus bulls.
Cottondale Game Ranch roans are known for the distinguishing greyish-brown coat abundantly tinged with strawberry red hair and beautiful horn growth throughout their lifespan.
The acquisition of an outstanding breeding herd of golden wildebeest in 2015 was preceded by diligent research and resulted in animals originating from the herds of top breeders such as Beyers Gerber, Crous Brothers, Norman Adami, Pilanesberg Game Breeders and includes Tuli genetics. Koevoet (28 5/8”) is a sought-after breeding bull purchased from Piet du Toit.
Some of the best black impala genetics are found at Cottondale and pride of place is taken by an exceptional black ram acquired from Pilanesberg Game Breeders. A new breeding ram of four years and 22 3/8” (Tip to tip 12 7/8”) was purchased from Piet du Toit in the Eastern Cape recently.
